Mawdsley 'doing everything possible' to recover from hamstring injury as Europeans loom
LAST UPDATE | 28 Jul
SHARLENE MAWDSLEY SAYS she is doing “everything possible” to recover from a hamstring injury as the European Championships loom into view.
Mawdsley, who pulled up during the final of the women’s 200m at the National Senior Track and Field Championships, has posted an update about her injury after being named in the Ireland squad for the upcoming European Championships earlier this evening.
“Unfortunately, I picked up a hamstring injury at Nationals,” she wrote on her Instagram page.
“I’m working closely with my medical team, and we’re doing everything possible to get me back as soon as we can.
“There’s a lot to work towards over the coming weeks, and right now my focus is on doing everything I can each day. Thank you for all the support and well wishes, they really mean a lot.”
Athletics Ireland revealed that Mawdsley was included in the Ireland squad for next month’s European Championships in Birmingham, but added that her participation will depend on achieving “full fitness.”
Mawdsley is set to compete in the women’s individual 400m, as well as the relay.
The timing of her injury is a significant blow for Mawdsley who has lowered her 400m personal best four times already this season. She also signed a professional contract with Nike earlier this month.
Kate O’Connor (Dundalk St. Gerard’s AC), Mark English (Finn Valley AC) and Rhasidat Adeleke (Tallaght AC) are also included in the Ireland squad along with Cian McPhillips (UCD AC) and Sarah Lavin (Emerald AC).
Adeleke booked her ticket to the championships after winning that women’s 200m final over the weekend, clocking 22.80 (-1.1m/s) to secure the A standard qualifying time of 22.85 seconds.
Meanwhile, O’Connor is currently competing in the heptathlon at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
She remains the overnight leader after four events, with the long jump, javelin, and 800m still to come on Wednesday.
